Lawrence "Biggie" Martin
Lawrence “Biggie” Martin 89, of Shinnston passed away at home on April 11,2018, after a long battle of cancer and dementia.
He was born on October 15,1928 ,in Bethlehem, a son of the late Clark and Mary Martin.
Lawrence is survived by his wife of 66 years, Melba Kesling Martin, and their children, Becky and Dave Shaffer, Melodie and Jay Fiber, and Missy and Don Handley. Also surviving are his Grandchildren, Mandy Stoneking, Matt and Christy Shaffer, Priscilla and Jason Lanham, Beau and Heidi Handley, Sophia Handley, Great grandchildren, Alex StoneKing, Brie Stoneking, Maddie Shaffer, Maggie Holstein, and Jackson Handley, and his beloved cat “Sparkle”.
After the death of his mother following childbirth, Biggie was lovingly taken by Frank and Willa McDaniel to be raised as their own along with their six children, in which he always considered his siblings. Biggie graduated from Shinnston High School and went on to the US Navy on January 10,1946. He served in Port Layautey, French Morocco and then honorably discharged on Jan 25, 1950. He continued in the Naval Reserves for 4 years. After working many jobs, he became a well - known and liked State Farm Insurance Agent. For many years after retirement many people still considered him their agent, and still called for his advice.
He was a faithful active member of the First United Methodist Church of Shinnston for many years until his illness. He was an avid Mountaineer fan and with his wife attended and supported boys and girls games. He loved to play golf with his buddies who are all now deceased.
In addition to his parents, Biggie was preceded in death by his daughter Mary Helen, siblings Frank McDaniel Jr, Edgar McDaniel, Eileen Akers, Barbara Hardesty Fortney, Mable Price, Miriam Akers, Sarah Martin Brown, Shirley Martin Brown, and Frances Martin McCartney.
He was the last surviving member of his family.
A private service was held on Saturday April 14, 2018, by Pastor Kevin Nuzum, son of longtime friend Carl Nuzum, Jr.
The Martin family has entrusted the care and the arrangements to Harmer Funeral Home. The Harmer Family have been longtime friends of the Martin Family.
