G Ferd Rogers of Jones Run Road “Jimtown” Lumberport WV entered Heaven's gates from United Hospital Center on July 25, 2018 after a brief illness. Ferd was born Oct 1, 1919 to D Ray and Frances Stone Rogers and is the last surviving member of his immediate family. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother David R Rogers and his sister Rosanne Rogers Wilson. He married the love of his life, Louise Camp Rogers on Feb 17, 1953 who also proceeded in death on Oct 5, 2007.
Mr Rogers is survived by three children, Richard L “Rick” Rogers, Mark S Rogers (Julie), who still live on the family farm they shared with their Dad. One daughter, Kimberly Ann Rogers Heck (Robert) resides in Shinnston, WV. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Benjamin “BJ” Rogers (Chas), Kristen R Pritt (Jason), Jesse Rogers (Ali) and Colton Rogers all of Lumberport living on or near the family farm, Kandace R Glasscock (Jason) of Tyler county. Suzanne Heck Kniceley( William) of Shinnston, Reba Rogers of Lumberport, and Patrick Belcastro(Brandi) of Haywood Road. His great grandchildren are Haivan, Landon, Camden, Casen, Canon, Bryar, Bronson, Ellen Louise, Gracie Lynn Louise, Wyatt, Levi, Ava, Eva Louise, and Calvin.
Ferd is survived by 5 step grandchildren, Eric Colaianni, Shannon Tinnell (Bob), Jacob Barr,Katelyn Jones (Tyler), Halie Bramer, and several step great grandchildren. He and his wife opened their home through the years to 25 foster children. He was still giving guidance to one of the children, Sarah Heater, at the time of his death.
Ferd graduated from Lumberport High School with the class of 1938, and attended WVU School of engineering. He served in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific which included Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He witnessed the original US flag being raised on Mt. Suribachi. Upon returning home he continued to work the family dairy farm until his Father's death in 1969. He continued to farm and was still guiding his son and grandsons in farming at the time of his passing. Ferd was deputy assessor of Eagle District for 23 years and was sexton of the Lumberport Lions Club Cemetery for 30 years. He, along with his wife, owned and operated Rogers’ Country Kitchen in Lumberport for 13 years. He enjoyed making models in his free time and was an accomplished carpenter and woodworker.
Mr. Rogers was commander of the American Legion of Lumberport, he belonged to the VFW, the Farm Bureau, The Farm Club and was part of making the community building on Jones Run a reality. He belonged to St Johns Lodge 24 for over 70 years.
When asked what the most important thing was that he did in his 98 years his answer was “becoming a Christian.” At the time of his death he was the oldest living member of the Lumberport Baptist Church which he was a member of for over 85 years. He was a Sunday School Teacher for many years and a Deacon. He helped remodel the church and install the baptistery that we use today. Ferd loved the state of Israel and kept up on the most recent events happening there. He supported them in prayer daily.
Friends will be received at Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston on Sunday, July 29, 2018 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Funeral service will be at the funeral home at 11:00 AM on Monday July 30, 2018 with Pastor Chad Hutson officiating. Interment will be at Lumberport Lions Club Cemetery.
