Obituary for Theda Tichenor

Theda Hurst Lyon Tichenor

“Nack”, as affectionately called by friends and family, a dedicated teacher, mother and friend to all she met passed on January 21, 2014 at the age of 74.

Born August 17, 1939, Theda was preceded in death by her mother, Theda Mildred Lyon Shively; grandparents, Howard and Nora Maude Hurst; her husband James F. Tichenor; and her cousin, Jo Ann Jones. She is survived by her son, James Howard Tichenor; an uncle and aunt, Howard and Juanita Hurst of Somerset, PA; cousins Jack and Helen Bonds of Raleigh NC; William and Linda Lasure of Somerset PA, and David and Lydia Hurst, of Colonial Heights, VA.

Mrs. Tichenor had a passion for educating students in English, Journalism, and Yearbook and never having her in class I can affectionately say, “You done well!” She, her husband Jim, and son James Howard were avid fans of all sports, but especially their beloved Lincoln Cougars. They attended about every sporting event ever held at LHS.

Although hard working and well educated, Nack never took up the art of cooking and was a mainstay at many local restaurants where she will be missed by not only the staff, but also the patrons who always stopped by her table to catch up on the latest “goings on” about town. As an avid lover of animals, sports, and history, Nack took in countless stray pets, supported many sporting teams, and worked for the preservation of local history.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 6:30 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Shinnston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harrison County Humane Society, 2450 Saltwell Rd., Shinnston, WV, 26431.

I am so sorry to hear of Theda's passing. As her yearbook rep for several years, I always looked forward to visiting her class at LHS. She was one of my favorite advisers--her passion for and belief in young people was heartwarming to witness. She was a terrific teacher and adviser, and I am proud to have called her my friend. She will be missed.

I was a student in her 7th Grade English Class in the early 60's at the Fairmont Junior High School Annex. I credit her with having been such an influence in my life having had her in those early years growing up. I'm just sorry I didn't get to stay in touch with her now knowing she was so close for so many years. She was so dedicated to her profession and loved her students. My prayers go out to her family and friends. She will be missed very much.

She was one of my English teachers at Shinnston High School Class of 1976! As I remember she appreciated one of my creative writing stories so much she accused my of copying it from somewhere else. lol

James and Family
I am so sorry for you loss. She is certainly an Angel in heaven. I know it will be hard not to have your mom with you but it's so better in our minds that God gained an Angel. And she was certainly and Angel. She was an remarkable lady. I had her as a teacher several years ago. I graduated in 1984. Ms. Tichenor worked till the day God called her home. You can tell she loved her job and everyone she worked with and every single student from the day Lincoln opened. She did not have a enemy that I know of. If there was someone that did not like Ms. Tichenor, then something was wrong with that person. I pray God will give you comfort and give you strength as you walk this road ahead of you. She will always be with you in your hearts because she was the kind of person that will never leave you. I loved her very much and she made me enjoy every day I was in school. I could say I was one that people picked on. With out her comfort to me, I probably wouldn't of made it through. Now we can say, We've got more to go to heaven for than we had yesterday. Praise God for that. God bless you all.

My heart breaks at the hear of her passing. She was the true meaning of a teacher. She knew how to get the information across that she was teaching so that you understood; she made it fun to learn; she joined right in with us; and if you were having difficulty she worked with you.
After graduating, I moved away, but everytime I came in and went to town, I would bump into her. She always called me by name and ask how I was doing and what I was doing. She was not only one of my all time favorite teachers but was one of my favorite, special people in my life. I will always remember her fondly.
My thoughts and prayers go out for her family and I know that she is a special Angel in heaven watching over all of now.

I had Mrs. Tichenor for 11th grade English. I remember one time she saw me walking down the hallway, walked out of class with my essay in her hand, and stopped me in the hallway. She told me that she loved reading my essay, and she thanked me for remembering all my grammar and style rules. She was a mainstay of Lincoln High School, and she will be sorely missed.

Mrs. Theda Tichenor was known far and wide for her attendance at Lincoln sporting events. I knew her for more than that, listening to her stories and whatnot nearly every day after school. I also sat with her for many women's basketball games, and always found her delightful and caring. We were lucky to have met her; may she rest in peace.

II went to high school and college with Nack and also had some social dealings with her after school. She was a very kind and considerate person and was seemingly always looking out for other people and especially her very own James Howard. She was very dedicated to her job and especially all of her students. This lady will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

I would like to add information about her paternal grandparents as they were Carl and Jeanette Lyon from Hepzibah. Her father was William E. Lyon of Hepzibah. She has 5 half siblings, Sabra Culberson, Morgantown, Steve Lyon, James David Lyon, Susie Lyon Freeman, of Clarksburg and Lee Ann Lyon Hibbs of Rockledge, Florida. I am proud to call Nack my sister. She was so easy to talk to and was loved by so many. I so wish her and I had more time to have spent together.

The treasure of your smile and kind words each morning will forever be engraved on my heart. I miss and love you so much. You have left a lifetime of memories on my entire family. Three generations have been touched by your compassion and enduring kindness. My husband remembers you as a teacher and friend who understood the importance of others. My children remember you as a teacher and friend who knew what strength really was and how to gain it. My grandchildren remember you as the lady who greeted them each morning with kind words of how pretty they are and a smile. Oh yes, a small piece of candy too. For me, there are no words that are good enough. You were a pillar of strength. You were always there to talk to, yet you never judged. Gentle, yet strong. I too remember you as a teacher and friend. A teacher of life whose footsteps are meant to be followed. I am sure Jesus said, "well done thou good and faithful servant". Thank you my friend, my mentor. Thank you for all the laughs, the tears and the "let me tell you whats". I will miss you,and love you but some day we will meet again on heaven's golden streets.
