Obituary for Virginia Ann Jurcak (Spadafore)

Virginia Ann (Spadafore) Jurcak, age 88, passed away on November 28, 2015.
She was born February 6, 1927 in Wyatt, WV to Italian immigrant parents, the late Giovanni and Philomena Scigliano Spadafore. Along with her parents and 12 siblings, she lived and grew up in various areas near Clarksburg, WV moving often as her father was employed, in his earlier years, as a coal miner and eventually owned a cash & carry grocery store in Bethlehem, WV.
Virginia graduated from Shinnston High School in 1944, was an energetic and enthusiastic Varsity cheerleader which she fondly spoke about during her life. She even turned cartwheels, at age 40+ for her nieces to see! During her senior year, she maintained a perfect attendance record, which she was proud of as well.
On May 1, 1948 she married her longtime sweetheart, Florian Jurcak (deceased 2014). They left their cherished hometowns and moved to Detroit, Michigan to find employment. Florian was employed by a home building/ concrete company and Virginia was an absolute, skillful, homemaker, wife and mother.
Virginia was interested in finding employment outside the home in the 1970s and was hired by a local company as a computer operator. After working several years she changed companies and positions. This time was hired as a clerical assistant which she enjoyed and worked several more years until her retirement in November 1994.
Virginia enjoyed playing golf on many Sunday afternoons with Florian. They were a real team of pro’s as each one, at times, would achieve a Hole-In-One on their favorite course. She was also an avid reader, most recently of the Shinnston News & Journal and the Wild and Wonderful West Virginia Magazine. She was a devout Catholic and during her earlier years was very involved with the St. Mary’s Womens Altar Society as Guild and as Captain, devoted much time to charity work as the needs arose in the church and community.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Jurcak Teague and husband Douglas who reside in Warrenton, VA. Her sister, Tresa Lamerato of Madison Heights, MI; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Everyone who knew Virginia heard her many stories about life as a child, growing up in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia, the warm, hard-working parents she had, the extended family, friends and neighbors who she loved and often spoke of during her life. She maintained an energetic, kind and loyal spirit as a “Mountaineer”, never forgetting her roots, the good-hearted nature of the West Virginia people and the beauty of “those hills.”
The last chorus from the West Virginia State Song sums it up:
Oh the West Virginia hills!
I must bid you now adieu.
In my home beyond the mountains
I shall ever dream of you;
In the evening of my life,
If my Father only wills,
I shall still behold the vision
Of those West Virginia Hills!

Always Rest in God’s Peace & Mercy Virginia.
