Obituary

Thomas "Tom" Romeo, also known by many as "Papaw", 85 of Shinnston passed to eternal life,
surrounded by the love of his family on Thursday, April 30, 2020 at his home after a well fought battle with cancer.
Tom was born on Sept. 19, 1934, the son of the late Catherine Lombardi Romeo and Joe Romeo. Tom graduated from Shinnston High School and attended Fairmont State College. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. He served in the US Army and worked at Owens Illinois in Fairmont for 25 years.
Tom's life long dream was to be a basketball coach, and though he never fulfilled that dream in a formal sense, he did so in a big informal way coaching Jerry West basketball as well as advising any young player who would listen. He was a huge supporter of Shinnston Jerry West, Lincoln Middle and Lincoln High players and, to this day, carried a key chain given to him by his young players honoring their
undefeated season. Tom loved basketball and could be found at Lincoln High gymnasium at just about every home basketball game. He also loved to garden and to bake pita piatas to give away to many of his friends, family, doctors, and nurses. Of all the things he loved in life, his family was the one thing he held most dear to his heart. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he made this no secret. His days were spent traveling from gym to gym or from the baseball field to the softball field, depending on
the season. They will never have a bigger fan. He loved traveling to visit his brothers and sisters and their families. The Romeo Reunion was his most favorite gathering of the year where he had all of his favorite people in one place.

WHAT IS A ROMEO?
It's crowding around in the kitchen
with everyone talking at once
It's lots of huggin' and kissin'
And smelling spaghetti sauce
It's dozens of places to call home
No matter where you may go
It's sharing and caring and giving
That's being a ROMEO
by Vicki Noll (Niece)

Tom is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Kathryn Paugh Romeo, and 3 children. His sons Chris Romeo & fiance Maricel of Aliquippa, PA, Michael Romeo and wife Lee Ann of Shinnston, WV, and daughter Kathy Romeo Martin and husband Eric of Shinnston, WV. His beloved grandchildren, Tyler Romeo and wife Emily of Morgantown, WV, Tyler Martin of Memphis, Tennessee , Olivia Martin Whitehair & husband Isaac of Fairbanks, Alaska, Madilyn Martin and Michael Martin of Shinnston, WV. Tom is survived by one brother, Joe Romeo in Ohio and three sisters, Mary Romeo Casciato of Philadelphia, Kathryn Romeo (John) Pagliaro of Indiana, and Lucille Romeo Hilton of Ravenswood. Also
surviving Tom are sister-in laws, Jane Romeo of Fairmont and Katie Romeo of Ravenswood, sister-in-law, Beverly Paugh (Marvin) McIntire of Owings, WV and brother-in-law, Carlton (Edie) Paugh of Mooresboro, NorthCarolina, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his aussidoodle, Milo, who was always by his side.
In addition to his parents, Joe and Catherine Romeo, Tom was preceded in death by his brothers Sam and his wife Gayle, John and his wife Pila, Frank, Tony, and Jack and his wife Phyllis, and sister Frances (Fanny) and her husband John, brother in-law Victor Casciato, Brother in law, Ralph Hilton, and Sister-in-law, Thelma Jean Paugh Romeo.
A private committal service with entombment will be celebrated by Father Gary Naegele at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lincoln High School Athletic Programs, with In Memory of Tom Romeo in the memo line, 100 Jerry Toth Dr. Shinnston, WV 26431.

Uncle Tom was a wonderful man. He and his entire family embraced me from the moment my mother, Phyllis married into the Romeo family. The family claimed my mother and siblings as their own. Uncle Tom showed so much love to our entire family. I will be ever grateful for his love and acceptance. May he Rest In Peace. Heaven has gained an angel.

Tom was one the nicest men I know. His love for his family was his legacy. He has fought a hard battle and fought it a long time. He is at rest now and heaven sure gained an angel with him.
